File Sharing and Storage Services

Feature Windows NT Server 4.0 Windows 2000 Server Novell NetWare 5.0
Index Services Available for Web content indexing and searching. Integrated Indexing services provides users with a fast and easy way to search for information on the network. Search for content stored on a Web share or file share. These services can help do full text searches against files in different formats and languages. Indexes native properties, such as author, on documents stored in the file system. Not supported. Web content indexing available by upgrading to Netscape Enterprise Server for NetWare which costs $1,295.
Dynamic Volume Management Administrators are able to extend volume sets, however this required the server to be rebooted. Add disk space to a Windows NT File System (NTFS) volume without rebooting or interrupting users. Not available
Distributed link tracking Not available Resolves shortcuts and links to NTFS-resident files that have undergone a change in name or path. Not available
File Compression Built into NTFS, Windows NT Server 4.0 provides seamless file compression services. This lets organizations optimize their valuable disk storage. Built into NTFS, Windows 2000 Server provides seamless file compression services. This lets organizations optimize their valuable disk storage Not available when using Novell Storage Services (NSS)
Disk Quotas Available through third parties Per-user disk quotas to monitor and limit disk space use. Supported in NetWare 5.
Hierarchical Storage Management Not available Remote Storage Services (RSS) automatically monitors the amount of space available on a local hard disk and removes local data that has been copied to remote storage, freeing up disk space. Not available
Removable Storage Management (RSM) Not available RSM presents a common interface to robotic changers and media libraries, enables multiple applications to share local libraries and tape or disk drives, and controls removable media within a single-server system. Similar to Novell's Media Access Layer.
Distributed File System (Dfs) Support Shipped as an add-on service for Windows NT Server 4.0.

Fault Tolerance. In the event that multiple replicated servers make up a Dfs share, users are automatically redirected to the servers that are available. This is also true if the server is taken off line during a file operation.

Load Balancing. Access to Dfs shares consisting of multiple servers, will be automatically balanced among the available servers.
Provides a single logical view of file shares across multiple servers and different files systems such as NTFS, NetWare, and NFS.

File Replication. A Dfs share can be made up of multiple shares across multiple servers with the same content to provide fault tolerance and load balancing. Windows 2000 Server includes file replications to keep the content between the shares in sync.

Fault Tolerance. Dfs definition stored in Active Directory and replicated for fault tolerance.

Site Proximity.Users are automatically redirected to the replicated server/share closed to them. Furthermore, this is all transparent to the users. A Dfs share appears to be just a regular file share as far as the client is concerned.
NetWare only provides Novell Replication Services, which replicates files from one NetWare server to another NetWare server.

No Logical View.NetWare lacks the ability to combine many different shares across multiple servers and file systems into one logical view.

No Automatic Fault Tolerance. In the event that a replicated server/share is down, users must still manually go to the next available server. If a replicated server is taken off line while a user is performing a file operation, they must manually connect to the next available server and start their operation from the beginning.

No Automatic Load Balancing. Connections are not automatically distributed across the available shares/servers. Again, users must manually connect to a specific replicated share/server.

No Site Proximity. Users must know the name of the server closest to them. In the event they move to a different physical location, they must manually acquire and enter the name of the server in the new site.
